Dick Young grew up in Chehalis, WA, on the family farm. He would tag along with his father as he tended the fields of the family farm. As his dad harvested the crops, which included barley and other grains, Dick had no idea that his path would stray from the farm, but would follow the trail of barley and the local hops that were also harvested in the region – in a more effervescent direction.
Dick was bitten by the brewing bug about a decade after he opened Northwest Sausage & Deli, his first business venture – – and a thriving business even today, where Old World-style meats are smoked on-premise. Dick officially fired up the brew kettle in 1994, in a small brewery he built behind the deli and smokehouse. Dick perfected over 20 distinct and different recipes over the years and they are still being hand crafted to this day.
Dick’s adventures in brewing & sausage making were matched by his other passionate pursuits. When he wasn’t working hard, he was playing harder, enjoying snow and water skiing as well as helicopter skiing, boating, scuba diving and riding his Harley. He enjoyed time spent with friends and family at his cabin on Riffe Lake – always accompanied by a good beer.
Dick Young left us too early; he passed away at his favorite place, his cabin, in 2009. But the traditional values of hard work and craftsmanship that hearken back to the days when Dick would watch his father harvest still ring true in every one of Dick’s Beers. Cheers!
