December 1, 1952 – October 25th, 2009
When the young Dick Young was growing up in Chehalis, Wash., where he was born on Dec. 1, 1952, he often would tag along with his father as he tended to the fields of the family farm. As his dad harvested the crops, which included barley and other grains, little did Dick know that his path would stray from the family farm, but would still follow the trail of barley — and the local hops that were also harvested in the region — in a more effervescent direction.
Dick first got the brewing bug about a decade after he opened Northwest Sausage & Deli in Centralia, his first business venture — and a thriving business even today, where Old World-style meats are smoked on-premises. Dick Young’s Brewing Co. officially fired up the brew kettle in a small brewery at the same location as the smokehouse and deli in 1994, after two years of hard work, paper work and planning.
In 2008, Dick’s Brewing outgrew its original home, and moved the production brewery and warehouse to 3516 Galvin Road in Centralia. The brewery continues to expand with each success, growing from just under 200 barrels brewed in 1995 to more than 3,500 barrels in 2010. About 60 percent of Dick’s beers are bottled, with the rest found on draft in taverns, restaurants and even the homes of the most discriminating beer geeks.
Dick’s adventures in brewing were matched by his other passionate pursuits. When he wasn’t working hard, he was playing harder, enjoying snow and water skiing as well as helicopter skiing, boating, SCUBA diving and riding his Harley. He also enjoyed time spent with friends and family at his cabin on Riffe Lake — always accompanied by good beer.
Dick Young left us too early; he passed away at his favorite spot, his cabin, in 2009. But the traditional values of hard work and craftsmanship that hearken back to the days when Dick would watch his father harvest barley or the locals picking hops still ring true in every one of Dick’s beers.
